Letters

This is where EX shares some of its mail with the rest of its readers so that you, the fans, know what other fans are thinking.
We love to get mail from our readers. However, please remember that EX is not a store and we do not sell the merchandise we review. Check your local comic and hobby shops (and other places that carry anime items) if you're interested in purchasing any of these products. And, if all else fails, you can try some of the stores available online. But please don't ask us to sell things to you. (The mark up would be terrible.)
Thanks again, and keep those letters coming!

Canada and Anime
From: Chiba Kanzaki (basara3@hotmail.com)

Hi. Thanks for putting up an online Anime Review/News Magazine. It's really great.
The main point of this e-mail is not to "attack" anyone, but just to say that many Canadians like Anime. In the article 'The Future of Anime', David Ho writes a section about excuses that Traitors makes and what comebacks the fans that are 'strong' would say.
In that article, the most annoying and discomforting excuse to me was the crack about living in Canada. Ok! So Canada doesn't have as much as anime imported as the U.S.. But hey, a lot of us do like and watch anime frequently. Most universities have made an anime club for themselves and many people, with different heritage backgrounds go and watches.
The answer of the excuse was the most disturbing of all : "Get out before your brain turns into Jell-O." I understood the joke, but hey, for us Canadians, it's an insult. We Canadians are just like the Americans.
I think David should come up to Canada and breath some fresh Canadian air, feel the Canadian hospitality, and see the beautiful landmarks of Canada. He'll then see that the brain would not turn to Jell-O, but instead learn more.

Hmm, it seems that Dave's remark about Canada was seen as offensive to some people. We received several letters about this, all polite but expressing their disappointment. I can assure you that Dave was only attempting to be humorous. Just as he often takes aim at all otaku, this time he singled out those who live in Canada. I can understand how people might take this seriously, but he did not mean this to be offensive. (He has been to Canada and has friends there too). And if Dave's brain were to turn to Jell-O, I'm not sure that we'd notice a difference

RYO-OH-KI 64?
From: Valtchez Langley (bobafett@piasanet.com)

Is their a past issue of EX with comments as to the possible fate of an EVANGELION or TENCHI MUYO game? Rumors have surfaced hinting to such an absurd thing as a game regarding Ryo-oh-ki trying to save her friends from some villain, called Ryo-oh-ki 64 as I do recall it.

Well, there have been numerous EVA and TENCHI games (the most recent being EVANGELION for N64, due out in the first quarter of 1999). However, I haven't heard about a TENCHI N64 game. And trust me, the premise isn't really that absurd for an anime video game.

MACROSS Again
From: Josh Cifrian (cifrian@evcom.net)

Is there a version of MACROSS DIGITAL MISSION VF-X that will work on an American Playstation?

There is not an American release of VF-X, so if you want to play it on an American Playstation, you have to have your PSX fitted with a "mod chip" so that it can play Japanese games. There are various places on the net that do this, or you can check with your local import video game store.

Leo and Simba and Bears... Oh My!
From: Simba (jotopa@bellsouth.net)

Hi I'm a die-hard LEO THE LION fan and I read a review of what seems to be a remake. I never heard of this. I'm not asking you about where to get it although I would like to but is there any more information you can give me? I have only 14 out of 26 episodes and I love Leo. Can you tell me more about that remake?

OK, the remake you're talking about is a new movie that was out in Japanese theaters last summer called JUNGLE EMPEROR LEO. It's actually going to be released in the United States next year by (of all people) Media Blasters. In addition, Pioneer Entertainment is releasing the old TV episodes of Kimba, so you should be able to get enough to last you for a while.

Still more MACROSS
From: Jeff Kleist (kodai_kun@hotmail.com)

In your letters section you said that ROBOTECH PERFECT COLLECTION was "gathering dust" in fact, I believe that they just threw out a new printing, and for the record, here is the scoop on the MACROSS tapes.
There are 8 volumes of MACROSS available, and 6 of SC and MOSPEDA. Each volume seems to have been subbed with the raw translations that were done for ROBOTECH, as NONE of the songs are translated. I really wish that they had taken the time to do the songs when they released this, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. The tapes are priced at $19.99 SRP and contain 2 episodes of MACROSS and the same 2 episodes of ROBOTECH. I managed to snag 7 of the 8 for $12 at a con, and I know that Right Stuf has them, in fact that's where I found the volume 2 I was missing. I hope that Streamline (or whoever can grab the rights) will finish the series, and translate the songs in the later volumes. They are definitely a worthwhile purchase, I recommend them. The box art is pretty snazzy as well.

Well, sounds like you found out where these tapes have been hiding. As for a second pressing, I'm kind of surprised, since they're supposed to be out of print. MACROSS fans, here's your chance to get the episodes you've been looking for.

Locke Lives!
From: Rei Urabe (rei_urabe.saitoh@nifty.ne.jp)

Hi! I enjoyed reading your feature on LOCKE!! Thank you for the feature, and also thank you for putting a link to my site. An English fan informed me of your feature, and I introduced your site to some LOCKE fans in Japan, too.
The new LOCKE series has just begun on a magazine ZERO. Its title is "Waltz," or "Embukyoku," and tells a story after "Vagabond". This Embukyoku tells how the Galactic Empire was unified by Empress Toress and other members.
Wow, I've written so much. Now I must go. I'm going to put a link to your site and introduce this online magazine. Thanks!

Thanks for writing! I'm glad that you liked our LOCKE feature. And thanks for updating us on where LOCKE is currently appearing. Those who follow his adventures will be pleased to know that he has yet another new home.

The Ghost Princess?
From: Wayne Lu (waynebruc@yahoo.com)

Since you also review anime released here in the States, I was wondering if you know of any definitive release dates on the Disney version of PRINCESS MONONOKE? Last I hear it was to be around Christmas time. Well, it's getting perilously close, and I can't wait. Thanks for any help you can provide.

The last information we had about MONONOKE listed it as a vague "First Quarter 1999" release, which means it could be released anywhere in January through March. But since it's already been delayed twice and we haven't heard much since then, I wouldn't be surprised if it was delayed again. Disney is being very cautious with this property, but the success of KIKI's video release should help.
